We at Calvary Lutheran Primary School have been fortunate enough to receive two boxes of ‘windfall’ apples from The Food Embassy.
The Food Embassy obtain these from McCarthy’s Orchard at McLaren Vale and have produced a series of cooking videos on their Facebook page, utilising windfall produce to stop it from going into landfill.
The apples given to us were stewed and sauced using the videos, with the remainder given to students to enjoy at their ‘brain break’ times.
The stewed and sauced apples then went to the Food Pantry at the Calvary Lutheran Church to either be made into meals for their free takeaway lunches on Thursdays or placed in food hampers.
Cook for Community is one program of The Food Embassy’s, teaching young people (aged 8-12) healthy eating principles whilst also cooking for those in need. It is a program that we at Calvary Lutheran Primary School would dearly love to adopt when restrictions would allow us.
We give our thanks to The Food Embassy for their work in our wider community and to the City of Onkaparinga Community Development team for giving us such valuable connections.
